Gender Responsive Development

The Essence of Mark of Resilience

We are aware that historically schools are unfairly pushing girls out in public education thus creating a “mosaic of gaps”. Schools suspend girls for minor stuff—like going against strict dress codes or “talking back.” In general, schools suspend African American, Latina and American Indian/Alaskan Native girls at higher rates than white girls. These practices tell these girls that school is not a welcome place. These practices may also be informed by illegal gender and racial bias.

Vision:

To eradicate the marginalization of girls of color in schools

Mission:

Mark of Resilience’s mission is to be the impetus for transformation and a solution for engaging, educating and empowering women and girls to become catalyst of change in education.

Guiding Principles:

Our guiding principles are honesty, integrity, transparency and a firm commitment to excellence in service delivery.

Summary:

Mark of Resilience specializes in culturally competent, gender-responsive, and trauma-informed practices. We provide intensive training, technical assistance, program facilitation, and educational management services that focus on attacking the ever growing achievement crisis facing girls in public schools, particularly from a culturally competent context.

The RESILIENT FACTOR:

  1. We identify and address trauma as the root cause of behavior that can lead girls into the juvenile justice system; thus, focus on the social- emotional development of girls of color.

  2. We seek to develop long term partnerships with schools and school districts that align our work with the clients’ strategic planning and long-range goals.

  3. We address the challenges that female school administrators face in a culture centered on accountability through standardized testing.

  4. We empower female teachers with research-based strategies for improving instruction for all children, especially for African American and Latin females who consistently rank as one of the groups most at risk for not meeting national learning expectations.

  5. We advocate for quality education so that students’ potential for success in school is greater.

  6. We provide in-depth gender responsive development training to broaden educational and workforce development opportunities for girls of color.

Gender Responsive Development: Projects

The GIRLS-ESTEAM Institute is designed to broaden educational and workforce development opportunities for low-income girls and girls of color, and identifies and addresses trauma as the root cause of behavior that can lead girls into the juvenile justice system. This Girl's Development Institute utilizes “The Six Essential Tenets (SET) of Highly Resilient Female Teachers, Leaders and Girls: A Context for Experiencing School” framework integrated with STEAM based instruction to promote the selection of STEAM professions.

Resilient By Design

Female Educator Empowerment Workshop

Resilient By Design takes school educators on a journey to discover appropriate culturally relevant and responsive instruction in contemporary public school settings.  Female Educators are introduced to practical classroom strategies that encourages and builds students’ self-awareness, self-concept, and self-esteem from a culturally and ethnically competent perspective.  It is important to note that regardless of race or ethnicity, all children bring learned experiences from their background to the teaching and learning process…

  • Deeply reflect upon their current thinking about themselves as female educators and their female students; then

  • Look differently at ways of enhancing self-knowledge, and re-shaping their instructional practices in an effort to raise female student achievement.
