THE NEED FOR GIRLS-ESTEAM

PK-12 pedagogical research indicates that gender and ethnicity impact student behavior and academic performance (Villegas and Lucas 2002). The way children are seen by their teachers has an incredible impact on their success in school. Due to racialized misogyny, black girls are stereotyped as loud or angry even before they step foot in a classroom. These implicit and explicit biases can negatively impact black girls’ self-perception and self-esteem, resulting in “stereotype threat.” Stereotype threat, in this case, refers to black girls’ fears of embodying assumptions about their character or behavior in the classroom. These fears have been found to negatively impact black students’ test scores and may even keep black children from pursuing student leadership positions in school.

Men outnumber women in most STEM careers. A substantial gender gap in engineering and computer occupations contributes to women’s overall underrepresentation in STEM. For example, just 16 percent of chemical engineers and 33 percent of environmental scientists are women. The share of STEM degrees is even smaller for women of color in the United States. In 2015–2016, women of color earned a small percentage of bachelor’s degrees across all STEM fields:

  • Asian women: 5.0%

  • Black women: 2.9%

  • Latinas: 3.8%

GIRLS-ESTEAM Mission

Mark of Resilience’s mission is designed to broaden educational and workforce development opportunities for low-income girls and girls of color, and identifies and addresses trauma as the root cause of behavior that can lead girls into the juvenile justice system. This Girl's Development Institute utilizes “The Six Essential Tenets (SET) of Highly Resilient Female Teachers, Leaders and Girls: A Context for Experiencing School” framework integrated with STEAM based instruction to promote the selection of STEM professions and future ART careers in Film, Television, Theater, and all other entertainment markets.

THE GIRLS-ESTEAM BREAKTHROUGH SET

GIRLS-ESTEAM  is a 6 part series around the "I AM" principle designed to:

  • Promote self-awareness, self-love, and self-actualization

  • Promote professional pathways through STEAM lessons

  • Improve State Standards in Math, Reading, Science and Writing

  • Teach life skills and coping

  • Emphasize the importance of living purpose-filled lives

  • Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills to resolve conflict and overcome circumstances

  • Create student developed leadership opportunities in their school campuses/districts

The institute structure consists of:

  1. Encouraging female youth to be present, be positive, and be participatory

  2. Engaging female youth through group activities that are introspective and instructive

  3. Providing a safe space for female youth to be open and honest without the fear of being judged

  4. Facilitating group processes with patience, and allowing the activities and the interaction among the female youth to unfold naturally

  5. Empowering female youth to overcome traumatic experiences by identifying their Resilience Factor

WHAT IS THE GIRLS-ESTEAM INSTITUTE?

Individual Participants

This is a 4 session institute requiring the girls to attend each session in September, November, February, and May during the school year at an off-campus location. They will be able to participate in monthly webinars and communicate on their campus social media pages about their growth experiences by posting encouraging messages. Every GIRLS-ESTEAM participant will receive the You Say But I Say, A Girl’s Journey to Resilience Journal and an "I AM RESILIENT" band. Registration includes the participation of all 4 sessions. Transportation will be coordinated by the campus and the Mark of Resilience Program Facilitator.
